Just for the boy with the golden body tanned by the Ipanema sun: the spatial distribution of LGBT night economy in the city of Rio de Janeiro

The aim of this article is to explain the inequality in the spatial distribution of the LGBT night economy in the central and southern regions of Rio de Janeiro in relation to the rest of the city. The central argument points out that, based on the exclusionary parameters of “pink capitalism”, the city government has revitalized certain areas, inspected public spaces and actions by entrepreneurs and promoted the fight against LGBTphobia, However, it focused on revitalized or valued areas of the city. In turn, although
entrepreneurs supported cultural projects and created jobs for creative professionals, they were mostly focused on high income gay men, and concentrated their investments in the Southern Region and Center of the city. Additionally, users have become responsible for selecting the places and organizing them for nightlife, regarding
areas in the City Center and Southern Region as symbolic spaces of mutual recognition for protecting and permitting them to exercise their identity in contrast to other regions associated with prejudice and rejection.
