Abstract

The aim of this article is to problematize the contemporary phenomenon of urban sprawl within the history of urbanism. This historiographic exercise was based on a critical analysis of the work of urbanization companies recognized as being foremost within the historiography of urbanism: the Compañía Madrileña de Urbanización, an urbanization company founded by Arturo Soria y Mata in order to implement his idea of a linear city; the Garden City Pioneer Company and the First Garden City Ltd, founded, respectively, to raise funds and to manage the construction of Letchworth, in the UK, the first ever constructed garden city, the theoretical scheme of which was conceived by Ebenezer Howard in 1889; and the City of São Paulo Improvements and Freehold Land Company Ltd, which implemented the first garden suburbs in São Paulo. The narrative on each company highlights the two urban concepts propagated by these companies, related to the idea of urban sprawl and to the business strategies developed in order to enable sprawl-related ventures.

Carolina Pescatori, Universidade de Brasília, Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo, Brasília, DF, Brazil

Professor in the Department of Design, Expression and Representation and on the Postgraduate Program (Master and Doctorate) at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at the Universidade de Brasília (PPG-FAU/UnB). She graduated as an architect and urban planner from UnB, and holds a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from Pennsylvania State University (USA) and a PhD in Theory and History of the City and Urbanism from PPG-FAU/UnB. She is the leader of the research group Topos - Paisagem, Projeto, Planejamento and a researcher in the Grupo de Pesquisa em História do Urbanismo e da Cidade (GPHUC/CNPq-UnB).

Professor in the Department of Theory and History of Architecture and Urbanism and on the Postgraduate Program (Master and Doctorate) in Architecture and Urbanism at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at the Universidade de Brasília (UnB. He is the leader of the Grupo de Pesquisa em História do Urbanismo e da Cidade (GPHUC/CNPq). He is a researcher at the Rede Urbanismo no Brasil (CNPq), and at the Centro Interdisciplinar de Estudos da Cidade (Ciec), at the Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas at the Universidade Estadual de Campinas, and at the Grupo de Pesquisa Cultura, Arquitetura e Cidade (Cacal) - FAU/USP-CNPq. He is a founding member of the Instituto Iberoamericano de Derecho Local y Municipal, created on the occasion of the XXVIII Iberoamerican Congress of Municipalities, held in Lima-Peru, 2010, and of the Associação Ibero-americana de História Urbana (Aihu), created in Brasília, 2013. He holds a Post-Doc in Urban Planning from FAU-USP/Fapesp (2008), and in Architecture and Urbanism at ETSAM/Universidad Politécnica de Madrid/Capes (2014). He has a CNPq/2 Research Productivity Scholarship, since 2014.
