Latin American Structuralism, the Scalar Debate, and Multiple Modernities: A Dialogue for Conceptualizing Latin America and Its Peripheral Condition.

Latin American structuralism not only aimed to characterize Latin America's peripheral capitalism but also contributed with relevant concepts about its scalar structuring: capitalist development on a global scale, where the peripheral condition is realized; the macro-regional specificity of the periphery; the role of nation-states; and even the role of subnational regional structures in peripheral development.
The objective of this paper is to establish a dialogue between Latin American structuralism and the debate that articulated the scalar organization of the world-system. It seeks to demonstrate how both approaches can mutually enrich one another and to identify the limits they encounter, particularly when conceptualizing the specificity of the macro-regional scale of peripheral spaces. In this regard, the paper ultimately proposes addressing this issue through the concept of multiple and combined modernities, to characterize Latin America and its peripheral condition.
