Derived Landscapes: African Immigrants and the New Arrangements of the Urban Economy in London

The consolidation of the presence of African immigrants in Western Europe since the late 20th century has contributed to the creation of “derived landscapes” in the continent’s major cities. Through the particular ways these immigrants engage in work and consumption, new arrangements in the European urban economy emerge, which require contemporary interpretation. This article analyzes the organization of commercial activities at Ridley Road Market, located in the London borough of Hackney, where most workers are from west and north Africa. The investigation is grounded on the theory of the circuits of the urban economy, proposed by Milton Santos in the 1970s, and employs the variables defined by this framework to identify and interpret the new urban economic arrangements in the context of globalization.
